Greed to Gratitude

My designer sunglasses have grown old. Many years of constant wear and tear have caused scratched lenses and crooked frames. My boutique leather wallet has become raggedy. The once fine leather now looks something like an old movie theater seat that has hosted many patrons. My fancy sneakers that costed a fortune have now began to tear at the seams and appear as though they have crossed the finish lines of many marathons. 

What do these things all have in common? They are all remarkabley unreliable and unimportant. For too many years of my life I categorized these things of upmost importance. My happiness relied solely on money and the merchandise that money bought. These materialistic things hardened my heart so very much and caused me to loose sight of what was important in my life. 

As my relationship with money grew more important, my relationships with the ones that I love started to take a back seat and fall through the cracks. I did not care about what was going on with members of my family or my friends. My only concern was what I had to do in order to keep my pockets and my closet full. 

Today, I am grateful to tell you that I have had a change of heart and that my priorities have shifted. I now do whatever it takes in order to keep myself grounded and humbled. I also constantly remind myself of how short life is, and I keep in mind that when I die I will not spend my final hours counting my money or taking inventory of my possessions. 

I have reassuring confidence that I will take my last breathes surrounded by loved ones. I will take comfort in my final moments by thinking of all the ways that God helped me to become a better person and how he has used me to help others as well. My heart that was once filled with greed and gluttony is now full of love and gratitude. Never forget that life minus love, equals zero.
