Guru Nanak and the cornfield

When Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a boy his father did not understand him. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was not interested in the worldly things as his father would have wanted. Though Guru Nanak Dev Ji went to school, he didnot seem to like it very much. Always he talked about God. His father thought that he should let him do something different and as he seemed to like being outdoors, his father decided to have Guru Nanak Dev Ji take care of the family cows.

   Guru Nanak Dev Ji took the cows to the fields and the cows enjoyed eating the sweet grass. Meanwhile Guru Nanak Dev Ji relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful nature and felt the presence of God everywhere. He liked the gentle breeze that was blowing and enjoyed being surrounded by trees and loved the sky above. Everything seemed to be peaceful and in perfect harmony.

  Guru Nanak Dev Ji began meditating under the shade of a tree. The cows meanwhile wondered into the neighbor's fields and began eating away the sweet baby corns that was coming up in those fields. The cows ate it just like the grass. A long time went by and the cows destroyed a huge amount of the neighbors' cornfields. The fields used to be full of baby corn and now there was almost nothing left. 

   When the farmer saw that his field was destroyed, he became very upset. He thought that he was ruined and how would he run his family now!

 He complained to the leader of the village named Rai Bular. 

   Rai Bular and the farmer went to Guru NanakDev Ji’s father, Mehta Kalu. Rai Bular was a very fair man. Since it was Mehta Kalu’s son who was responsible for the accident, he asked Mehta Kalu to pay the farmer for the corn that had been destroyed. So they all went to the field to see how much it would cost as refund for the damage.

However when they got there, the field was full of baby corn and even greener and better than before!

   Everyone said that some sort of miracle must have happened! Perhaps because Guru Nanak Dev Ji was greatly devoted to God, hence he was protected!

 Rai Bular remembered that an astrologer had predicted Guru Nanak Dev Ji would become a great man! He started to think that there is something divine and special about him !
