Indifference

The whole household was in a celebratory mood. Priya fulfilled all the requirements and was granted a full scholarship for pursuing her Ph.D. at the University of California.  

"I'll accompany you to settle you down in the new environment," Priya's father said in assurance.

"No need Dad. There will be many students traveling from India. We will be met at the airport by the University staff and taken to our hostel. There will be three days of an orientation program to familiarize us with the campus layout. You will only be wasting your time."

Mr. Sharma refused to be swayed. "This is your first time traveling overseas on your own. I will take a week off. Nobody can predict what can

happen en route. So, I should travel with you. Anyway, I have booked a room in a hotel close to the university, to be available in case of an emergency."

"C'mon...what emergency could arise requiring your presence" 

Much against her wish daughter and father boarded a Lufthansa flight from New Delhi with a layover of seven hours at Frankfurt and then a nine flight to reach them to Los Angeles International airport. Mr Sharma never shared that they were travelling Business class to surprise his daughter.  

On boarding, Priya was taken aback. "Dad why did you have to do this? It is an unnecessary expenditure".  

Little did she know of what was to come. At Frankfurt airport all passengers were compulsorily required to take the covid test. While Mr. Sharma tested negative, Priya's report showed up as positive.

Then followed the need to have her quarantined at a designated hospital for a fortnight. Priya was shocked to say the least and her confidence took a nosedive.

"Don't worry, I will be here till your quarantine period is over" he promised.

"Thank you Dad. I wouldn't have known how to deal with this unforeseen situation" Priya confessed with tears in her eyes. " I'm so glad you are here. With you around I am confident of making it to the University albeit delayed".

"That's what parents are for isn't it?"
