Spectrum Of Life- Color Red

Ramani and Govind had eloped from their home away to Mumbai. With the help of some of their friends, they were getting married in a temple, that day. There was some kind of tension in the air, understandably, The Pundit made them walk around the fire in a traditional way. The bride looked beautiful, innocent and full of trust in her man. She was dressed in red attire, which enhanced her beauty. The Groom looked handsome. The wedding was complete with” saat phere” round the fire with Agni as the witness. Our traditions are sometimes very ironic. I will tell you why, later. The marriage was consummated. Ramani and Govind were still at home enjoying the bliss of married life. One morning there was a banging on the door and Ramani was pulled out from slumber half awake and half asleep she opened the door. There was a pretty lady outside the doorway and Ramani were shocked to know that she was Govind’s wife from a previous marriage. Ramani was heartbroken. She felt sad that her love was reciprocated by Govind with mere passion. The colour of her love and Govind’s passion was read indeed!

The colour of flames that they considered witnessed during the wedding was red and so was the colour of flames that consumed the beautiful body of Ramani, as she committed suicide out of shame, frustration and dejection. The Agni Devata, who was the witness of the union would punish the girl who is the victim, not the perpetrator of deceit. What an irony! The colour red, the colour of love is very powerful.
