Colin’s POW

Colin could see Adina’s fear and panic. He could smell them in the air. She was afraid for their pack, and he loved her for it. He didn’t think she knew how much of a luna she already was for the pack. When she panicked, Colin panicked himself, but for different reasons.

He was afraid she would run. They had slowly gotten to a place where she didn’t remind him every day that her stay was just temporary. He could see that she was seriously considering staying. She started talking about long-term plans for the pack, for them, and it made him happy.

But now he was afraid that all of that would be undone. He knew she would leave him and the pack if she thought it would protect them. He could not allow that to happen.

“Adina, sweetheart, we got this. Even if they know what pack you are in and if the Order finds out, and if they come for you. We can handle it. You are safe, the pack is safe, and we will keep it that way,” he tried to convince her.

She looked at him with those beautiful pale green eyes, now filled with tears, and nodded.

“Okay” she said.

“Okay?” he asked.

“Yes, I trust you,” she said, and Colin’s heart swelled with pride.

He leant over and used his free hand to wipe away the tears from her eyes.

“I’m honoured by your trust, and I won’t let you down. Please don’t cry babe, you are breaking my heart,” he said.

She gave him a shaky smile that didn’t go all the way to her eyes. But it was a start.

The rest of the drive they spent in silence. Once they boarded the plane, they were informed the lift off would be in about thirty minutes. They sat together around a table, discussing how to find the traitor and how to make sure Adina and the pack were protected.

“Did you tell anyone else in the council about this meeting?” Sean asked Cernack.

“No, I could handle it myself,” he replied.

“Who knew about the Clear River pack?” Adina asked.

“Me, Cletus, Jasmin, Roger, and Mirabelle,” Cernack said. “It’s always the five of us that chooses the placements and do the background checks.”

“Could they have told anyone else? Or perhaps asked someone for advice?” Colin suggested. But Cernack shook his head.

“No. We all agreed when we started doing this that all discussions stay between the five of us and that no one outside us should ever know the places we are discussing.”

“That means it has to be one of you five that is the traitor,” Sean concluded. Cernack nodded.

“Something must have happened recently,” Adina said. “It has always been the same five members. If they always belonged to the Order, it would have been smarter to get rid of me when I was younger. Before I had Sean, or at least when both Sean and I were inexperienced. Why wait and let us get stronger?”

“Could it have to do with us diminishing the Order?” Sean asked.

“What?” Colin asked.

“Since we lost Adina’s family, the White rose pack has been actively hunting down all traces of the Order. We were quite successful at it. About two years ago, it looked like we had all but eliminated them, just a hand full of their ranks seemed to be alive.”

“But we were wrong. Six months later, the Order started reappearing with unknown force. Since then, they have become stronger and stronger. We have had a hard time containing them.” Cernack explained.

“Could something has happened than that caused one of our packs to turn against us?” Sean wondered.

“It is possible,” Cernack agreed.

“I have an idea on how to test the waters. I’m just not happy about it, as it will put some of our allies in danger,” Adina said.

The men all looked at her.

“We can spread the rumour that I’m not happy with the pack that I’m in now, that I want to switch. And to make it easier and quicker, we will go with one of the previous placements. We will contact some of our most trusted allies and let them in on the plan.”

“If they agree, you Cernack will tell each of the other four members that you need help with the handover plan. You will give them each a different location. Then we will wait to see if any of the handovers get attacked.”

“It’s a classic, but it might work. As long as they don’t talk to each other,” Sean said.

“I can make it work,” Cernack said confidently. “But what if I’m the traitor?” The other three people around the table looked at him.

“Then, my friend, there is no use in us fighting. You are my most trusted advisor, besides Sean. You know me better than most. If you betray me, we are already lost,” Adina said with a small smile.

“My loyalty to you, my lady, is undying,” Cernack said with a bow.

The captain announced they would take off in five minutes. They all took their seats and strapped in. Once in the air, Colin turned to Adina, who sat next to him.

“Come here,” he said, opening his arms to her.

She smiled and came over and sat in his lap. Colin let his arms wrap around her, drawing her close to him. He needed her close to him. As she rested her head against his chest, he bent down and breathe in her scent, snuggling his nose into her hair.

“Better?” she asked.

“Much. I just need to have you close. My wolf needs to feel like he is protecting you,” Colin explained.

“My wolf enjoys this as well,” Adina said with a sigh, making Colin smile. They sat like that for a while in silence.

“Colin?”

“Yes babe”

“Um, can I cook dinner for you some day? Maybe Sunday if that is okay with you?” Adina asked and Colin could hear she was nervous. He pushed her away so he could look at her.

“I would love that, Adina,” he said, looking into her eyes.

“Okay, good,” she said with a smile. “I know it is important for you as alpha to eat with the pack,” she added.

“It is,” he agreed. “But we can have dinner by ourselves as well. The pack understands the need for bonding.” he continued.

“And I love the idea of you cooking for me,” Colin’s wolf was very pleased.

Preparing and sharing food was an important symbolic action for werewolves. For his mate to want to prepare food for him was an amazing feeling.

“Is there something that you don’t like?” Adina asked.

“Not really. I’ll eat most things. And I’m sure that whatever you make will be delicious,” Adina seemed satisfied with that answer because she snuggled into his chest again.

He let one of his hands stroke her back and soon he could feel her breathing become heavy and regular. She had fallen asleep. Colin smiled and let himself drift off as well.

When they were back home, they filled alpha Aries in on what had happened and what they planned on doing. The rest of the day was spent on getting hold of their allies that they would like to involve in the plan. Alpha Aries volunteered to be one of them.

It took them a long time to get to bed. Before Sean went off to his room, he let Adina know that her break from training was over. Tomorrow it was high time for an all-day training day. With all that had happened during the day, and the impending training day, both Colin and Adina were happy just to crawl in to bed and snuggle up to sleep.
