Promises

As we hold hands and take vows forever,

My heart beats with a determination too,

With promises that I make to you, 

There are some I make to myself too.

While I promise to love you, 

I promise to love myself too.

Happiness in our life we will have,

If my heart is calm and happy too.

I promise not to sacrifice ‘me’,

To the altar of this union,

I and you together make ‘Us’,

But Us will not always start with you.

It’s not that I don’t value this relation,

But I prize myself too,

Selfish I may seem to you,

But I wish you to be selfish too.

There will be nothing to gain from each other,

If ‘I’ get lost in the making of ‘we’

Whom will we love, if not an individual, 

Just a spirit, the relationship would be. 

Vow together with me, thus,

To keep alive the ‘I’ in ‘we’

No, we will not get lost in each other,

But find in each of us, a better version ‘me’.
