Her heart had always yearned for a daughter. On both occasions, when the babies were born, the doctor had announced "It's a boy!" Boisterous boys who picked up tadpoles and mice as pets. Boys whose rooms turned messy and off- limits in the teenage years. Boys who finally grew into tall young men. They were wired with unique personality traits. 

This weekend would prove to be different. She was going to welcome her daughter home. After years, she would have someone with whom she could share her make up and jewellery. She thought of redecorating a spare bedroom but then decided against it. "It's unfair to impose my sense of aesthetics upon her. Let her choose her own path", she thought.

Family members and friends turned up in large numbers to greet her daughter. The house was tastefully decorated in lavender colored balloons and long stemmed pink roses. The indulgent bash which ensued made the woman of the moment feel warm, loved and reassured. 

As she bid the last few guests goodbye, her husband sat down, a tad tired in his usual, favourite spot on the plush sofa. His face mirrored a gamut of emotions, all at the same time. 

"Some things never change, some do change and some need to be changed" she thought to herself. 

As she sunk into the couch, a pair of familiar but hesitant hands enveloped her into a bear hug just as they had for the past nineteen years. "Thank you mom", she said choking with emotion. "I am still getting used to the feminine aspect thing. Thank you for being the biggest source of support during my transition from John to Josie. I love you" 

"I love you too my dear, in whichever form" she replied. "Always and forever"
