The War Vetaran

I sat by the broken window and lighted a smoke. With the whole city burning, the flame of my zippo appeared tame and embarrassed.

I took a drag and let out the smoke. There on the bed lay the patients, all charred to death. The allied troops had announced their victory, and we were expecting help that never came. Not until now.

The boots of soldiers now rang in the downstairs of the empty hospital. I crawled out of the room and raised my hands above my head. They surrounded me and asked me questions in a tongue I did not understand. Then they laid me on the stretcher and took me out.

This is all that happened to me, and yet they gave me a war medal. Today I got a call saying they wanted to make a film on me. I did not want to disappoint them. So I read books and made up a heroic story. The movie people should arrive anytime soon. I am ready.
