Hello Dear Best Friend

Hello Dear Best Friend

Hello dear best friend,
how have you been?
So much has happened and so much has changed,
much like you and me.
From where we began, to where we are now
and all the years interspersed in between,
it’s not like you knew me much.
And as it stands now,
I am the breeze knocking on your door,
and my dear friend, deny it all you want,
to you I am the wind you ignore.
There has been growth, no doubt,
you have changed and I have too.
I am the ghost of your past, and deny me all you want
but I have seen who you were, before seeing who you are.
Is that what you are scared of?
Is that why you don’t keep me around?
Do you think I will recount stories, of when you were a child nauseated in the car?
Or how you fell for a guy eight years older than all of us,
and the date which didn’t go too well?
Are you afraid of my memory? Are you afraid of what I know?
Did you wonder where you would hide,
should I hold to your head, the gun of memories you try so hard to shun?
Did you really think, and I really hope you say no,
that I would use these remembrances against you in a crowd of snickering strangers?
If you say yes, and I really hope you don’t,
Then from where we began, to where we are now,
and all the years interspersed in between,
it’s not like you knew me much.
Was it a rising threat that we would, sooner or later, be vying against each other?
Did you spend many a nights, thinking I would laugh and ridicule you,
if you were to lose?
I really do hope, you say no.
Or was it a morbid fear of imagined inferiority, which I would always remind you of?
If you say yes, my dear best friend,
it’s probably because you would do too.
You know how they used to say,
‘Keep your friends close, and enemies even closer’?
So tell me, dear best friend,
do I classify as neither?
