She Dances
She Dances
You would think she disliked the caregivers
The removal of underwear, gloved hands and wet wipes
Rolling left and right to position the sling
Being lifted into her wheelchair
But this is all she has known
And in her mind, she dances
The struggles with everyday life
Always dependant on friends
Watching them do impossible things
Like reaching for a shelf, or turning on a light
But this is all she has known
In her mind, she’s a bird
She flies overhead, above the trees
Sees all the little people below, going about their business
She goes higher, the streets become lines on a map
Not afraid now, she has the freedom to go where she likes
Now the carers wake her, time to be fed
But she does not mind
Because in her mind she dances
