The Other Side
The Other Side
I was walking down the street last night
Witnessing the battle of darkness and light
The calm in the chaos of winter
As if the happening of something sinister
In the deserted street on a night so cold
I saw two kids in a blanket that could barely hold
Shivering in their sleep and yet smiling
Making the situation so compelling
Walking up to them, I saw their starved frames
Their childhood devoid of love and games
I looked around in search of their home
Only to find a broken mirror and a mattress of foam
As their bed beneath them, and a bottle of water
Meanwhile, the boy woke up and walked in a totter
And looked at me with his big wonderful eyes
As though holding all the stars of the skies
Patting his back, I gave him some cash
His face lit up, knowing their dinner won't come from the trash
He ran to his little sister and woke her up
And told her he'd get some food and water in a cup
I had followed him to his 'home', as he called it
I looked at the scarred reflection of myself as it hit
The realisation of the other side of life
And how bits of paper cut through the world like a knife
So the next time when too much love and comfort becomes suffocating
And you feel caged, remember, someone has been waiting
To feel this love and to have this comfort
All their life and all they got is hurt
And the hardships that the world holds
This is how their life unfolds
You will realise how privileged you are
And if you get a chance to put a star
In someone's life full of dark skies
Happiness isn't so hard to give if one tries
The world is in need of love and care
And we all have enough of it if we are ready to share.
