Adventure no.1 - Mary’s Mystery Unlocked

Chapter 1- Claudine

Hi! My name is Claudine and I’m 16 yrs old. I love to read and research ghosts, especially watch ghost and horror movies. This week I have saved up all my money to watch heaps of horror movies. I chose my favourite outfit which is usually black and grey and got ready to go. I turned the doorknob to open my bedroom door but it just wouldn’t budge. “Ugh! Charlie! Unlock the door now! I’m getting late for the movie.” I screamed . “Nuh uh” he said. He is such an annoying 14 year old brother. “Fine I’ll wait!” I said. After 5 mins I realised he wasn’t going to get me out, these brothers are such a bother. Did I forget to tell you that my other hobby is reading detective stories? Well now you will know. I used one of the tricks I read. I took a thin piece of paper and quietly slid it under the crack in the door, then I took a hair clip and pushed it into the keyhole gently. I heard a soft thud, so I pulled the paper and guess what? The key came with it. Thank you Nancy Drew! I quickly unlocked the door and rushed out of the house before Charlie notices that I’m gone. I can’t wait to see the expression on his face when I come back. Ha! In your face bro!

Chapter 2- At the movies

I got to the movies and found my seat. The movie started, it was called “Don’t Breathe”. At last the movie came to an end, it was horrifying just the way I wanted it to be. I got ready to go but I felt like staying a bit longer, so I waited till all the movie credits ended. I still didn’t want to leave yet and go to my boring house even though I felt like I shouldn’t be here anymore. So I thought of what to do. Suddenly I remembered an idea, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I always wanted to try the “Bloody Mary!” It’s a way to meet Mary herself. To do this you have to follow some simple steps, go into a bathroom, turn all the taps on and the switches off and make sure you light up a candle nearby. After you do all that you have to chant Bloody Mary three times facing the mirror. I ran to the cinema toilets and made sure no one was there, obviously no one was there as this was the 12:00 am batch, the last one. I followed all the steps and got ready to say the chant.

Chapter 3- Bloody Mary

“Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary! Aaaaaaah!” I screamed. I swear I saw a black figure in the mirror, or was it behind me. Bang! Thud! Gasp! Everything turned black. All I know right now is that I’m in a hospital and I let a ghost out! I could see mum and dad crying and Charlie scolding me that I should’ve stayed locked up in my room. That was so true right now! I told everyone that I was fine and they needn’t worry. Charlie asked me what exactly happened because all they knew was that I banged my head hard and the cleaner found me. I said that I slipped in water and banged my head on the toilet which made Charlie let out a giggle and my mom scolded him. I really didn’t want to tell them about my ghost problem. I got back home at 2:00 in the morning so I just went back to bed to have a little ponder over my situation. By the time everyone woke up it was already lunch time, so we had to skip breakfast which put mom in a bad mood. Charlie took advantage of what happened last night and kept bugging me. “Claussy! be a good sissy and do my chores for me or you will slip and break your leg !” He demanded. “Shut up Charlie! If you tell me to do one more thing for you I will let out your secret crush to everybody!” I screamed back which shut him up, but after awhile he kept on going so I just ignored him.

Chapter 4- A new friend

Every night I had nightmares that felt so real. One night I changed into my PJ’s and got into bed, preparing myself for another nightmare. I instantly plunged into one so I tried pinching myself but that didn’t work. I suddenly thought of something I never thought of before, I did let a ghost out so……. all my nightmares must be real! A beautiful teenager, which I assume is Bloody Mary, flew right through my bedroom window and started talking. I couldn’t understand anything so I told her to take my pen and write but that didn’t work as she had no idea how to write. I thought for a while and then said “ Use this pen and circle the words you want to tell me using this book”. That was one of my detective stories. She started circling some words, they said “ Thank you for unleashing me, I’m very sorry I hit you I had no idea who you were.” “That’s okay, but what are you going to do now that you’re here?” I asked. She circled, “I will punish anyone who disobeys the law and order.” “That’s fine with me.” I said. She flew through the window and went towards the moon. She suddenly stopped, turned around and waved at me so I waved back and then she vanished into the moonlight. I just couldn’t believe I saw and communicated with a ghost and I’m acting cool about it.

Chapter 5- Monday school day

The next morning I had to go to school. I had breakfast and then walked over to get my bag when I noticed the headline in today’s newspaper. It said “ Culprit found Dead”. I read the article and immediately found out who had done it. I realised I was late for school so I ran all the way. I was expecting a lot of noise and my BFF’s (best friends forever) Sally and Darrell to greet me but instead I was greeted with silence. The school was deserted and I got a scary feeling at the pit of my stomach. I checked my watch again and heaved a sigh of relief . I was wearing my watch upside down. “I should really get a watch with numbers” I thought to myself. School starts at 8:30 am but instead I came at 6:40 am. I found my favourite spot, the most darkest spot in the school, the closet. I decided to read my detective book as there was nobody here yet and it was peaceful. I took it out and as I started reading Bloody Mary flew inside. “Hi Claudine, realise anything different about me?” She asked. “Oh, hi there Bloody Mary what a surprise and nice job on killing that thief”. I said startled. “Yes I did kill that scared cat he stole way too many things out of that jewellery store. But do you notice something different something, I couldn’t do before?” She asked again. “Ummmm, wait a second you can talk!” I replied excitedly. “How did you learn so fast Bloody Mary?” I asked. “ Well I did borrow one of your books, I hope you don’t mind and then it all came back in a rush. Talking to too many ghosts made me forget English in the first place. But please stop calling me that” . She begged. “ Oh! I’m sorry. I totally forgot what it really meant” I apologised. After that we started chatting like good, old friends. But then my BFF Sally knocked on the door(who is always early). We said a quick bye to each other and then Mary flew away. “I heard voices in there so I figured it was you as this is your favourite hideout”. Sally said and pulled me out. “ What happened early bird?” She asked. “I read my watch wrong”. I replied annoyingly. Then we both laughed and chatted while we waited for Darrell.

Chapter 6- Bully problems

At lunch break, I went over to sit at my usual place with Darrell and Sally. But just then Maya decided to sit on the same place too. Maya bullies literally everyone, including small insects and she always gets her way. “Santa Claus, move out of my way! From now on this is my bench!” She demanded. “No way Maya, we got here first and stop calling me Santa Claus, you know very well that my name is Claudine!” I argued back. “You dare speak to me like that missy, well lets how you well you go on when I push you off!” She threatened. I looked for Sally and Darrell for help but they just nudged me to get up as they hated getting into fights, especially with Maya. “ I am not letting Maya win this one, at least for once she should face defeat.” I whisper-shouted. I was scared because Maya is strong but I acted bravely. Just when Maya came over to push me, Mary suddenly appeared and took my side. She hissed at Maya and made her move backwards. Nobody seemed to see Mary except for Maya and I. Mary probably had a power to do that. Maya fled like a coward in the corner of the cafeteria and started whimpering. Everyone laughed and some people wondered how the bold and sharp tongued Maya was doing such a thing. It was definitely a show watching Maya behave like this, a show no one would forget. But not for long as she burst into tears and ran to the restrooms which made us feel a little sorry for her. I whispered a quiet thank you to Mary and said goodbye. She flew up into the sky and I watched her till the sun blinded my eyes and I couldn’t see her anymore. Sally, Darrell and I sat on the bench and started talking. They both kept asking me what happened to Maya but I just said that I had no idea. At the end we just chatted about having a sleepover.

Chapter 7- Sleepover catastrophe

We asked our parents about the sleepover and they all agreed for it to be in my house. I was so excited and made sure everything was perfect as this was my first Sleepover. I heard a “Ding!” That was my doorbell! I quickly rushed downstairs and greeted my BFF’s. “Hey Darrell, wow! What a big bag, what do you even have in there?” I asked astonishingly. “Well, I can’t go to sleep unless I read a few books”. She exclaimed. “Well don’t ruin the sleepover by boring us with your books”. I said and we all laughed. Darrell is actually supposed to be in grade 9 but she skipped and came to grade 11 as she learns things quickly and we are so happy she is with us. We figured out where to sleep and what to do and we also took all the candy we could and couldn’t wait to eat all of them. Then Charlie came in and asked if he could join us. Darrell quickly said yes before Sally and I could even think about it. We eyed each other thinking the same thing. We sat in a circle ready to play truth or dare when Mary flew through the window looking like a bomb ready to burst! Sally and Charlie screamed and Darrell nearly cried. I calmed them all down and told them the whole story about my ghost friend and that to swear they wouldn’t say a word. “Is she the one who scared Maya?” Darrell asked. “Yes, she is the one who also has killed a lot of criminals but don’t be scared she won’t harm us.” I replied.

They all promised they wouldn’t say a word. Then I asked Mary what happened to her and she explained “I was coming over to your house when I got confused with another house just like yours, I looked into the window and saw my daughter.” She broke into a sob. “You have a daughter?” We all asked. “Well you see, before I died I was pregnant and people were chasing me to kill me. I found a safe hiding spot to have a rest and get the baby out. I tried and my beloved Maura was there in front of my eyes and she had 2 daughters and a son!” She cried. “Wow stop I can’t understand when you cut into two stories.” Sally said. “Okay so when she was born my main enemy found me and stabbed me, so that’s how I died and had no idea what happened to my baby girl. So today when I looked through that window I saw my Maura taking care of twin girls and a baby boy. I also saw the person who killed me looking after Maura like her own father.” Mary raged up. “Mary, we have all heard your story so now we will help you as much as we can to get you and Maura back together.” I said heartbroken at Mary’s tragedy. Suddenly my mom barged in so Mary disappeared. “Mum knock on the door before you come in please!” Charlie begged. “Oh okay Charlie I totally understand something is going on between you and you know who right?” Asked mum in a childish voice. “Uuugh mom please!” Charlie grunted. Mum place a plate of cookies and hot chocolate and walked out the door. “What was that all about?” Darrell asked curiously. Charlie gave me a threatening look but I ignored him because this was the best revenge I could get back at. “Well, Charlie used to have a crush on you soo….” I said giggling. “Why used to?” Darrell asked going all googly eyes on Charlie. “I have a crush on you too.” She said happily. I couldn’t believe my eyes, they actually like each other! They shuffled next to each other and smile unexpectedly. The whole sleepover turned into making a plan to help Mary.

Chapter 8- Plan A

The next morning after the sleepover, I thought about what we were going to do and how it could all fail, but there is no more time so we put plan A in action. Our school has asked us to earn money for our charity by selling cookies so that goes into the plan. Sally pulled the wagon of cookies while I held the box for money collection in my hand and Charlie, Darrell and Mary walked behind. We knocked on Maura’s front door expecting to see her but instead a big, sturdy looking man glared at us. “What are you here for?” He asked in a deep, hollow voice. “Well, we are earning money for our charity so would you please be interested in some delicious cookies?” Darrell asked in a sweet voice which surprised us all. “Oh, sure why not.” He said and started looking through the cookies. While he was choosing Mary flew into his house and looked for Maura. “Maura!” She shouted. Maura quickly rushed at the sound of her name and she thought the voice sounded fairly familiar. “Yes?” She asked. “Oh! Maura my darling, it’s me your mother Mary.” Mary said soothingly. Maura stood glued to the ground, not believing her ears and eyes, she was petrified. Mary explained the whole story to Maura and at the end Maura said “ I knew there was something wrong with him, he ruined my whole life!” She said drastically. “But I’m so happy you came back for me!” She exclaimed happily. Just then her ‘dad’ walked in and caught a glimpse of Mary, he stood there mortified and he also forgot to shut the door behind him so we all watched, scared for both of them. “Excuse me, snap out of it! I know everything, Mary is my mother!” Maura exclaimed. “No my love, don’t listen to her!”

He pleaded. “No way, and don’t call me that!” She shouted back. “Fine, I see you want to bring out the bad side of me.” He threatened. He grabbed Maura’s arm and dragged her to the attic and shut her up in there. Mary tried her best to help Maura, but she couldn’t do anything as she was a ghost. So Mary signalled me to quickly take the babies while she distracted her killer. I quickly carried the sleeping boy and told the girls to come. Mary followed just as he shut door hard on her. Mary quietly cried all the way home so we comforted her as much as we could. We gave all our small sized clothes to the girls and told Darrell to sew a few for the baby boy as she is an expert at sewing. Mary looked after the babies at an abandoned house which was not yet sold so we all helped Mary to clean it. Everybody tried their best to think of a plan B.

Chapter 9- The Fearsome Foursome

From that day on, Sally and Darrell always came to my house after school and from there we went to the house Mary was in with the children. Mary’s killer, who was called Barron, always kept an eye out to see if we four were nearby. We called ourselves the fearsome foursome and promised to always help Mary and her family in any situations. One day I got a great idea. “Guys listen up, I have a plan.” I said excitedly. “Really! Tell us.” They all pleaded. “Okay, so as Halloween is coming up I thought maybe we could dress up and totally disguise ourselves and let Mary in.” I exclaimed. “I never knew you were this smart, Claussy.” Charlie said. “Oh please!” I said. “So what’s gonna happen is you Darrell are going to make dresses that are creepy, beautiful and attractive using your sewing skills and Sally you have to bring makeup as you are gonna be our beautician.”I said at the eager looking group.“Yes!” They both shouted. “And by the way, I’m sorry Charlie you can't come, this time only girls you’ve gotta look after the babies.” I said. “Okay fine, but you have to do my chores for the rest of the year.” He said grinning. “Ugh okay whatever.” I said disgusted. We waited impatiently for the day October 31st to come and eventually it did.

We put plan B in action. Darrell had already started making the costume the day I told her to, so it was all finished and ready. Sally bought all the makeup too. She showed us the costumes and they looked exactly right. I got to wear a black stylish top with ripped jeans and also black lipstick, eye shadow and many more. I also wore a black necklace with skulls on it, I looked spooky and creepy which I loved. Sally wore a beautiful white flowing gown with glitters and sparkles and she wore white makeup. She also wore plastic see through slippers and a white necklace with a heart pendant and she also added white glitter on her hair. Last but not least Darrell wore a cute hot pink top with a skull on it and cute short shorts with bats on it which she designed herself. She wore cute runners and some cute party makeup and she tied her hair high on her head. We were all ready to go! Charlie saw Darrell and nearly fainted, which made us all giggle. Except we felt like something was missing, something which could totally hide our faces. “Masks!” We all shouted. I wore a witch mask, Sally wore a dead bride mask and Darrell wore a zombie mask. Now we were all ready to go! I took a cauldron for my lollies while Sally took a basket and Darrell took a hot pink handbag. We all headed out to Maura’s place while Charlie went to get Mary and look after the kids. We knocked on the door forgetting all about Mary but she came at the nick of time and put her invisible mode on as I call it. Mary has a lot of superpowers but her weakness is that she can’t use it all at once, so for example if she is invisible she can’t float through doors. “Trick or treat!” We asked shakily, praying to God that he doesn’t recognise us. “Shut up and leave me alone!” He growled at us and shut the door in our faces just as Mary flew in. We happily walked off, waiting for Mary to do her thing.

Chapter 10- We succeed

(Mary Speaking)

I got into the house just as Barron closed the doors. I got off my invisibility power so I could float through the attic door and see my lovely Maura. “Mother!” She cried running up to me. “Oh Maura my love, I missed you so much!” I cried back. “Me too mom but first, how did you get in here?” She asked. “Well, that’s a long story I’ll tell you everything later, but first let’s get you out of here.” I said happily. “But wait mother, where are my beautiful children?” She asked worriedly. “Maura don’t worry, they are just fine do you think I’d forget about them? I have been looking after them actually but just for now the kids are looking after them.” I replied stroking her red hair which looks exactly like mine. “Oh Thank God, I love you mom!” She said relieved and walked up to hug me but then walked right through. “Ooops! I totally forgot.” She said startled. “It’s okay, I love you too my love” I said. Just then Barron walked in so I had to disappear. “Uhhh is my mind playing tricks on me cause I just saw your bloody mother” he said surprised. “Don’t you dare call my mother that again!” Maura screamed back. “Ok Ok no need shout, here, take your lunch and I’ll be back for dinner and by the way your mother is Bloody! Hahaha!” He said slamming the door shut and laughing all the way. I re appeared and told Maura to ignore him and I told her the plan. “There is a window on that far corner right, so I’m gonna pile boxes up so you can get out. After we will slide down.” I said hoping with all my heart that everything will go right. “Ok great idea!” Maura exclaimed. I piled boxes higher and higher and made a box stairway so she could climb more easily. I finished, so she climbed all the way to the top but couldn’t quite open the window. “Mom! I need help please!” Maura shouted. I saw a fire extinguisher nearby, so I took it and broke the window with it. “What was that!” Barron said. Maura quickly escaped and she slid down the roof just as Barron unlocked the door. “Nooooo!” He shouted and ran all the way back down. Maura and I ran all the way home and made sure Barron wasn’t following us. “Yes, my darling you are free!” I shouted. “Thank you so much mum!” She shouted back and we both had an awkward hug, which did not work out properly. I took her to the abandoned house I was staying in and we both knocked on the door. Everything was just wonderful!

Chapter 11- A perfect ending

(Back to me again)

Someone knocked on the door and we all got excited. “I’ll get it!” I said running up to the door. “Hi Claudine!” Mary and Maura said together. “Yes Mary you got Maura back, we were all so scared for you both.” I said happily. “Guys come see who it is!” Charlie said. “Mummy!” The twin girls screamed and the little boy tried walking up to her. “My babies! Dolly, Mary were you being good girls and Harry my baby did you miss me, I hope you didn’t cry too much.” She exclaimed excitedly. “Wait Maura dear, did you actually name one of your darlings Mary?” Mary asked surprised. “Yes I did mom, at that time I felt Mary was just the perfect name for my first daughter.” Maura said happily. “Oh lovely!” Mary said happily. Then Maura turned to us and said “Thank you, all of you so very much. If none of you had done this my life would’ve been in his hands forever and most importantly I would’ve never met my own mother!” She said with tears in her eyes. “And especially you Claudine, if you hadn’t been so brave I would’ve been nothing. Please tell me anything you need I have to return the favour you did for me!” She said. “Please don’t cry Maura. My one and only wish is for you to buy this house and live happily ever after.” I said pleadingly. “Of course!” She said with happy tears in her eyes and we all hugged together including the babies and Mary somehow.

So from that day on, the fearsome foursome which is me, Sally, Darrell and Charlie, always go over to their new house. Barron went on a search to find Maura but eventually got caught by the police for kidnapping and other criminal activities. As for Darrell and Charlie they promised each other that they would get married one day but I highly doubt it! One day Mary told us her whole story. “I was going to be the queen but then I married the love of my life secretly who was my family’s rival team. We made the decision to have a baby and then after a couple weeks our friend betrayed us and let the whole town know! So they came and killed my love and I just got away but eventually they killed me too.” Mary said sadly. But we cheered her up by letting her know that everything was fine now and that we are all there for her. After that we asked Maura who she got married to and she said “ So I also married the love of my life, Harry and named my baby that too. Life was good until Barron barged in and told me a bunch of lies about Harry which I believed and divorced with him because he was trying to tell me the truth.” Maura finished sadly with tears in her eyes. “Oh Maura it is not your fault, I promise I will help you get him back.” Mary said and suddenly she started fading away. “Mary what’s happening to you!” We all screamed. “It’s okay, I have finished my work here and so I can’t be a ghost anymore . Thank you guys so much for getting me back with my daughter. Bye everybody and Maura too have a good long life!” She said and vanished away. We all were very sad but also happy as Mary’s mission has been accomplished and we can’t wait to meet another ghost. So you see it all turned out happily and the fearsome foursome has another job, to bring Maura and Harry back together!

No matter how big or strong you are, no matter how small and weak you are. You just need a team that will show love and care to one another to achieve and succeed a similar goal.
