I (Actually) Knew The Way

I (Actually) Knew The Way

Scene 1:

It was a rainy day. I kept bumping into people all along the way. It was only a short distance walk from the vehicle that dropped me at my apartment. The rain blinded my vision.

A lady stood by the doorway and as I passed by, gave me a stone-cold look. I pressed ahead and waited for the lift to carry me to the 15th floor of my building. I could have smiled at my acquaintance, I thought!

I stood outside the door of a flat on the 15th floor and as I was about to ring the doorbell. The door of the next flat was open and I could hear an angry couple arguing. ‘That is none of my business, I thought. But then the angry old man crashed a lampshade on the lady’s head. Blood started oozing instantaneously as the lady collapsed to the floor in a pool of blood.

How does this fare, for a middle-aged woman like me who just came over to collect her keys from the landlord on just the first of her few visits? Cheeky, eh?

Scene 2:

Here too is the scene of rain. Rainwater had seeped through and flooded my entire living room. I waded through the waters of my low-lying living room, climbed up the steps and reached the dining table area.

As I closed my eyes to keep off from the delirium a bit, an entirely new movie unfolded in my mind. I had argued with my boyfriend just a few hours ago. Though fights are common, it was a bit out of hand this time.

I jumped over the wall in the middle of the night, as the rain clouds just started to announce their presence with big persistent drops of water. I found that same lady by the doorway here too, right at the corner of the road as I ran for my safety. Did she want to say something to me, I thought, as I ran past her in a hurry. I had to get to my flat at the earliest. And there were no vehicles plying by in this unearthly hour.

Just as the rain grew thicker, I entered my flat on the ground floor. Water everywhere!

Scene 3:

I scratched down the forty-ninth page I had used to write down, over half a day of my today and the idea had just begun to form. It was due on the next page. Just then the clock struck and announced that it is 12 am. There was a busy day ahead with lots of people and appointments to catch up with. 'So I better get to bed' I thought before the sun creeps all over my face.

I longingly looked at the strewn papers with my guitar by the side, asking me to scribble that one musical idea down. I went and hit the bed as my eyes automatically closed.

I remembered the lady as the last thought before sleep consumed me.

After Thought:

Three different scenes on a whirlwind tour of my life! What if I knew every single time what I wanted to do, instead of what I had to do?

What if I (actually) knew the way?
