Life with Scoliosis

Life with Scoliosis

I was born with scolisosis. My shoulders were uneven and when I walked my one leg was taller than the other. This affected my height. Growing with a physical disability wasn't easy. When I reached my high school, I was very concerned about my appearance. It hurt me to see people looking at me weirdly. There were many nights when I would bury my face on the pillows and cry silently. My parents were my greatest support. My mom always motivated me to stay positive.

Gradually, I started to accept myself as I was. I started to love myself. I used to think ' If I didn't accept myself then no one would accept me. It is God who has created me this way. At least I am able to walk'. When I was at college I faced many challenges. There were guys who mocked and insulted me. But those incidents made me stronger. I became like a rock just for the sake of my family. I knew if I was broken my parents would be sad, which I never wanted.

I studied well and scored rank in my B.Ed examinations. I didn't want my physical disability to be a disability in my achievements. Then came the topic of marriage. Many guys rejected me and it was around this time I fell into depression. I wasn't sad about the rejection but the words pricked my heart. I  was called 'handicapped', 'shorty' 'ugly' and much more. I was heartbroken but never did I show it up on my face. I didn't want to see my parents go weak. If I smiled that was their greatest strength. There were relatives who teased me saying " she has crossed the marriage age, yet she isn't bothered and living a happy life.'' The society never accepts the one with a physical disability. They treat them worse.

Then came a day when I met my husband. He is the most positive person ever. He never looked at my physical disability and loved me for who I am. We faced many challenges during initial days of married life. He wasn't financially stable. But I never saw him being upset. He always smiled and said-" This too shall pass". He never spoke about my disability. He always respected me amd motivated me to achieve my dreams. Looking at him makes me realise that the hardships which I faced in life were worth it.We are happy in our lives and blessed with a daughter too.

Life is not always a bed of roses. In order to live we need to learn to deal with the thorns too. There may be endless mockery and taunts but whatever it is if one is strong nothing can shake him. Hardships are always meant to make one stronger. I hope my story would inspire someone. Thank you for reading!
