The Last Evening We Spent

Zack is a teenage boy with no friends at high school. One day, the boy stumbles upon a little notebook. The diary belongs to a girl named Rui, a fellow classmate. Rui tells Zacl that she has a terminal illness but he shows very little empathy for her. The boy’s reaction intrigues Rui and she follows him around.

Despite of Rui’s efforts to befriend Zack, he displays almost no interest in her. However, Rui is persistent and “forces” Zack to hang out with her. After spending more time together, the two eventually grow closer.

Every classmate is talking about Rui and Zack. There are dating rumours about those two circulating at school. Nonetheless, Hina (Rui’s best friend) is not too happy about it. Despite of being the closest person to Rui, Hina has no idea that her friend is dying from a terminal illness.

After going on a trip together, Rui’s health condition worsens. Zack goes to visit Rui at the hospital. One day, Rui sneaks out of the hospital and takes Zack to see the fireworks. Later, the hospital discharges Rui.

To celebrate her return, Rui and Zack arrange to meet up. The boy chooses the very first coffee shop that they went together. However, Rui doesn’t show up. When Zack arrives home, he learns that Rui died. On her way to meet Zack, a complete stranger just stabbed Rui in the chest. This news leaves the boy completely devastated and he misses her funeral.

When Zack was finally able to accept Rui’s death, he goes to her house. There, the boy meets Rui’s mother. The woman hands her daughter’s diary to Zack. While reading her last notes to him, Zack imagines a final encounter between him and Rui.

After making peace with Rui’s death, Zack reaches out to Hina. He shows her Rui’s diary. An angry Hina storms out of the coffee shop. She is furious at Zack for not telling her the truth.

Zack goes after Hina. Despite of Hina’s negative response, Zack hopes that one day they can become friends (Rui’s wish). One year later, Zack and Hina go visit Rui’s tomb as friends.
