The Last Smile

 Shubho  and Benny  are standing  beside the canal  and watching the sun  set, as they do daily. Everyday  both of them come here and do the same work, as this was the place where  they met for the first time, on a Stormy night . When the canal water was passing with  its high speed, heavy Thunderstorm was also passing. At the same time Shubho was also running saving his  head, and suddenly he saw a little thing in that canal struggling for his life .The pup was standing on a small  "daali", which could break any time . Shubho couldn't stop himself going there,even after knowing the consequences .He ran  towards the canal, and rescued the pup .

Now the  little pup  has grown up and  is now named Benny.  That's why both of them  came here to remember that  incident and to witness their  relationship since that day.

Every single member of the  village Gopalpur, knows about the epic friendship of Shubho and Benny

Whenever Shubho creates a mess Benny  comes to save. And when Benny creates a mess Shubho comes to save him . but this bond of friendship affects only one guy, Rocky as he had many bad experiences with them! 

Let me narrate one to you.

Rocky is always in a mood to rag people, but his old school gangsta image spoils, when he tries ragging Shubho . Shubho is a kind hearted guy . and also weak in physical strength compared to rocky, but he has a special power benny". He won't leave rocky after seeing his mischief .

And he made him run around the village for almost 5 rounds.

This is how both of them were sharing their golden times with each other..

The next morning, Ramesh Sahu came to Shubho's house in search of his pet . He called Benny   with a sarcastic tone and an angry expression. "Come here you bloody murderer" .The whole family  came out with a sense of suspense on their faces ."What happened Ramesh uncle ?, why are you shouting  like this " asked Shubho.

Ramesh went angry and said "your stupid dog has killed  my goat . 

Shubho — " no sir, my Benny hasn't done anything . you shouldn't doubt him, he is here for many days, he never behaved like this, he can't kill Anyone . 

Ramesh – "oh please, keep your innocence with you . I am not doubting you people, I am 100% sure .I'm well aware of tricks like you people .

Subendu ( Shubho's father ) – what do you mean by ' you people '. we can be poor .But we are not thieves or murderers so don't blame us unnecessarily .

Ramesh – we will see  the truth in today's Panchayat, and after that you just wait what I do .

The  family  got scared  a bit, even though  they know that Benny  has not done anything. But  Mr.sahu is a rich person and  fighting with him is not a wise decision, they  will only have to suffer.  

 Rumours  spread throughout  the village. "The dog  has to leave the village"   the case of Shubho and Benny  became moot for the villagers.

Shubho got pissed off, he can't imagine that Benny will leave the village. Benny comes to Shubho and starts licking his feet as he is expressing his sadness . "don't be sad Benny, no one can take you from me", I know you haven't done anything" remember when I got the high fever and we were unable to reach the hospital, everyone has lost his hope . but not you  . then how can I leave hope? I know the situation is a bit mire but we together will see the end of this. 

The Panchayat meeting settles down and Mr sahu starts firing  his words against Benny to prove him guilty .Shubho and his father also start protecting him with their debate .Everyone was giving their point . The sarpanch is also bending towards Mr sahu a bit. 

Suddenly Rocky  came behind Shubho,holding a poisonous spider in a small bag. He wanted to hurt Shubho and wanted him to behave like an  abnormal in front of the village members . but Benny saw Rocky and smelled his dirty thoughts .

He just grabbed Rocky's hand with his mouth . 

Then Rocky cried at his high, and the spider fell and ran from there . Everybody looks back and sees the bleeding hand of Rocky which was done by Benny .  Shubho can't understand why Benny did this.

But Mr Sahu got it . He saw this was the right time to provoke the Panchayat head against Benny .

"Look sir, how dangerous and harmful this dog is, he has turned mad, and it is very harmful for our children ." .

The sarpanch agreed to it . after seeing it .

They order the family members to leave that dog outside the village.

The Panchayat is over for today.

Mr. Sahu stepped out laughing, Shubho stood numb, He stuck in an abyss of thoughts .Benny and Shubho looked at each with tearful eyes .

Unfortunately the most horrible night of Shubho which he never wanted to see In his life, has arrived. "The last night of his friendship .from the time the decision has been ordered he hasn't faced off with Benny . He just sat on the back side of the house and cried, cried till the time all his tears hadn't become dry.  Every single memory is flashing in front of his eyes and was making him equally sad . From that Stormy night to today's dark night . He was imagining the future, about how helpless or weak Benny will be after he leaves him . how badly the people outside the village will treat him .he got clouded with millions of dark clouds, he is just losing his thinking capability . 

He can't see Benny as a half dead body. And at last he decided to put poison in Benny's food . He thought he could live a better life away from this cruel world. Heaven will gonna treat him right . 

With these thoughts he brought the poison, and he does that work which he would have not imagined in his life .He mixed the poison in Benny's food .along with his tears of great pain Every drop of poison is covered by one drop of tear .

           Suddenly he hears a Sound . He got up and walked towards it to see and found that Benny was running out of the house . without wasting the time he started following Benny. 

Again the same night, the same Stormy night.  As if nature is also feeling the sensation of break up .Benny kept on running for almost  half an hour stops. Shubho also stops at the same time at a distance . For 5 minutes both of them stood still at their places, Benny was facing him back . All of a sudden Benny looked back .Smiles with those tearful eyes .

And then Shubho realized that this was the same place where they met for the first time .the same canal, the same flowing water, the same storm ..

Benny looked forward, and ran towards the canal, then jumped into the flowing water inside the canal. 

Shubho screamed " Benny yyyyy" .

But it was too late, the thunder storms and water had taken Benny with them .

Shubho  was in a great shock, in a great depression. He bent on his knees, and cried at his max . till morning. At the same place .

Subendu came in a hurry and took Shubho with him . He couldn't speak anything . throughout the night a single question roamed in his mind .

'Why Benny!  What was the meaning of that smile .? Why ?

As soon as he arrived home, he got into his room  and closed the doors .He slept for 3-4 hours . and then came out,  he was still in a very wrong situation inside him.  

He went to the backyard of the house .

After roaming for a while, he found the bowl in which he had mixed the poison, But he got another thing with it.

The neck band of Benny, which Benny never separates from himself.

He took that band, hugged it and then 

He got the answer for that  "last smile"
