There was a man who came to our school on inspirational speech day. This is what he had to say.

Many of us have addictions we want to break. Why? Because we want to improve ourselves to become better people, ultimately.

And doing these things is hard, right?! We may think at the moment that, oh one more time won't hurt, or it is just too hard! Too difficult.

And so we may have this addiction in front of us, it's right there daring us, mocking us.

But wait, just hold on a moment, you haven't let that cigarette, you haven't drunk that alcohol, you haven't pulled the trigger to end your life! You haven't looked at that pornography, you haven't eaten all that sugar, you still have time to change your mood to not yell.

You see we have this tendency to blame or make excuses, even to just blank out any choice we have, not to think about it, to ignore it, to say that we lost. Why, because we think we can't take anymore.

That's when you have to go and say, No!! I will beat you, you are my enemy! Then remember when and why it stopped becoming just a habit and became a struggle.

Because while that drink still hasn't touched your tongue, while that smoke hasn't touched your lips, while you haven't looked at inappropriate things, you are still breathing and haven't stopped your life, while you're at the brink of your addiction, or a major decision, there is time.

Each second! You haven't caved in, your winning. You haven't done it yet, there is still a decision, each second is a second Won!

Stay the course and grow stronger. Shalom.
