I Was An Infant Once
I Was An Infant Once
I was an infant once-
A canvas standing naked before an artist,
A young sapling that rose
Above the ground that contained it;
I held time in my palms,
Innocence in my eyes and with each passing day,
I grew into a boy.
Friends, sports and crushes-
I was on high with a craze,
Painting my world with colors ablaze;
Then troubles began to rain
Like hailstones on a grey night and I knew
The lows of a roller coaster ride.
Rushing into college and then
Onto pavements towards work,
I had shopping lists and pending bills
Filling up my desk;
Brick by brick, I held time by reigns again
And learned to love me.
I tripped over love one day
And married her in a chapel;
We had our own children,
We built our own fireplace.
My hair now stands grey and time is slipping
Through my shrinking fingers as my eyes linger
Over the memories in my room;
My love is asleep next to me and I kiss her
On her temple; It had been a fun ride
And I fall in love with her one last time;
It won't be long before I meet death
With a friendly handshake.
