Stethoscope

'He has invited me to his place' I told my best friend excited.

'What are you going to do? I mean I know you are not the one to make rash decisions.' it was her way of cautioning me.

'I said yes after careful consideration.' I laughed.

'So when and where?' she was curious.

'His flatmates are away and he is on his own. Tomorrow, I will go to work late or may not, depending on how things work out between us.'

'Wow, you have indeed thought about this thoroughly.' she said. 'Do you think he would propose?'

'I don't know, but he sounded excited about the whole thing. Planning carefully how I would arrive and what we would eat etc.' I said.

Next day I wore my best and arrived at the designated place. He picked me up in his car. We made small talk, both of us were nervous. He showed me his home and we finally sat cozily in his room.

We spoke for a while when he suggested he could teach me how a stethoscope is used. I was feeling my heart beating fast even before we could start the lesson. While we fooled around a bit finally the stethoscope was kept on his chest and I struggled hard to hear his heartbeats. As I inched closer and closed my eyes shut from getting distracted. I felt his lips on mine. We kissed hard as if there is no tomorrow.

My heart fluttered and I remembered my bestie asking me if he is going to propose to me. I was sure this is just the beginning. Though we were the total opposite, maybe that is what attracted us the most.

He was studying MBBS and I was working in a call centre. He belonged to the high flying society while I belonged to a humble dwelling.

Just as we looked at one another, he gave me a guilty smile.

'I am sorry I should not have' he apologized

I was being brave, 'Hey it's okay really, I enjoyed it.'

'Please don't get me wrong, we can't be together. I have to complete my MBBS and I have to be super dedicated.' He shook his head.

I got up from my awkward position and stood up picking up my bag.

'Yes, I understand. I think I should be leaving.' I controlled my tears and put on my best blank expression.
