Foolish Hope

Foolish Hope

From the infinite darkness, a single flame rose,

Shattering the silence with its bustling joy,

In its eyes you could see no sorrow,

On its unlined face an innocence you can’t borrow.

It led me through the darkest forests,

And to the highest cliff,

But as life’s law dictates,

The fall had to follow.

I cursed the flame,

I hated the love it gave,

I wondered why it showed me the light,

When all the world gave was hate.

But no matter how much I fought it,

I knew I needed the flame,

I needed hope’s foolish voice,

To keep me sane.

The flame stood by me,

Through every high and every low,

and never seemed to die,

Even in the bleakest storm.

I knew now,

Its eyes had seen all sorrow,

But it saw pain as a friend, a companion,

A kindling for the fire of hope.
