Mother Earth

Mother Earth

In the deep silent night,

I heard someone cry...

It was indeed a painful cry...

I went out to see as to who it was and why...

But I could see no one...

But the scream was a painful one...

I saw water seeping out of the ground.....

Wondering I turned around...

Oh! I sighed...

Is it a sewer leaking...

Or a pipeline breaking...

But it was none...

I heard the cry again,

Puzzled and confused I got again...

This time I heard someone speak...

But couldn't find anyone again...

The voice then said, 'I am the Earth, the Mother Earth, the weeping Earth.'

'Oh!' I said, 'You are the Earth, the Mother Earth. Happy Earth Day, dear Earth.'

'But, why do you cry? Tomorrow is the day of mirth.... the day of Earth.'

I squatted down, getting closer to Earth...

Then she said, 'You give me only a day of love and affection..... Rest are days of dejection.'

" You raise slogans...

Display placards and posters for a single day.... as if I am important for a single day."

"I know I am not young, but still have a right to adorn, with lush trees all around."

"You are making me bare.... which for me is unable to bear."

"My trees inhale carbon dioxide to give you oxygen.... as I know you need oxygen to breathe."

"You are ready to spend lots of money for the artificial oxygen, but care least about the real source of oxygen."

"Don't turn the lush landscape into a concrete jungle.... and build skyscrapers all over."

"You are developing no doubt... But! at what cost?"

"Think over it again, as it would calm all your concerns,"

"Least would be your worry for pollution if you adopt afforestation."

"Don't celebrate me for a single day.... dear, I am special every day."

I could neither console her nor wipe her tears...

Like we humans, we are creating these fears...

Before I could make a promise...

And take a vow...

Mum woke me up and asked me to go...

And water the plants in the garden...

Which was a boring chore I had always felt...

Now I feel...

it is the time to fulfil my vow...

And do my bit for the dear Earth, the Mother Earth...

"I will water the plants regularly and plant more trees...

Yes!!!! I will try to make the Earth, a happy Earth...

Not just a single day, but every day of my life."
