Weight

How much does an apology weigh? 

Surely no more than a bouquet of flowers or

fingers tightly knotted together in a nervous ball.

An apology costs as much as the time

wasted on weeping for friendships that have gone with the wind

and the venom that blackened the hearts

of those in need of it.

It looks like the weight on the shoulders

of those who held on too tight

and realized that it was too late to let go

since their nails had stuck in the rotten words.

Apologies are meaningless because

by the time they are formed

the nasty arguments have etched their way

into the paper skin and the screaming

has added itself in the pile of voices of one’s head.
