I was a studious and active girl in my childhood. My grand mother lived with us for few years. Summer was the time we had to spend with her. I was easily bored with anything. I was always searching for new activities to fill in my day. One day, she told me a story that changed my approach to life.

There lived a boy of my kind. His father sent him to a priest to seek knowledge. The priest sat in a silent room which was surrounded by a beautiful garden. The boy asked, I easily get bored with all my work and activities. How can I enjoy my life? The priest asked do you have a hobby or passion? The boy said No, But why are they required in life. Then the priest asked him to do what he was told, he was given a cup filled with water and go round the garden and return with water. The boy went around the garden and returned with water. The priest asked if he saw the beautiful flowers, fruit-bearing trees, beautiful birds, colorful butterflies and so on.. He said, No I could not see them since I paid attention not to spill the water while walking through the garden. Then The priest asked him to go the second time and visit the garden with the same cup of water. The second time he could see and enjoy the beautiful flowers and their fragrance, fruit-bearing trees, beautiful birds chirping, colorful butterflies flying and so on.. he was very happy and returned with a smile on his face. The priest could see there was no water left in the cup as it was spilled all over in the garden while he walked without looking at it.

Then the Priest told him, the cup of water was the chaos, duties, and responsibilities of life. the beauty of the garden was the passion, hobbies, forms of art and enjoyment of life. The priest explained to him, life is beautiful when we balance both. Do not forget your responsibilities while you enjoy your life and do not forget to spend time for your heart and soul while you fulfill your physical needs. balancing both is the art of living happily. From then the boy started to look at things differently. He enjoyed every piece of work he did and he never gave up on keeping himself happy.

After listening to this story, My approach towards life changed. I started seeing the beauty in each work I did, I kept myself happy by perceiving passions, hobbies and still fulfilling my materialistic needs. Now I know how my grandmother seemed to be happy always.
