Chapter 3- new responsibilities

Ezra:

By the look on Davina’s face, I could tell that she wasn’t afraid to face the police, but afraid to face the fact that the police needed to be involved in the first place- they were only ever consulted for crimes like petty theft, never missing cases, although that’s probably because Dawsbury has practically never had a missing case before.

Fortunately, the time for us to be interrogated hadn’t come yet so we had time to put our heads together and think of anything that could help the police find Nate and Vanessa.

I’m pretty sure Davina hadn’t realised, but it didn’t seem like they were the only ones missing, or at least absent- our high school’s hallway is always packed with people, but today, it looked dismal and empty, except for a few people. Not wanting to add fuel to the fire ravaging in Davina’s brain, I held back all thoughts on there being other missing cases as well but was secretly relieved when we moved to the library. Clearly, she hadn’t noticed and speculated partly to herself, “Maybe, it’s just some sort of misunderstanding?” but both of us knew it wasn’t.

My heart leapt as the double decker doors of the library were opened and a tall man with an authoritative air approached us. “Davina Reznick and Ezra Hernandez?”, seeing our nods, he continued, “As you might already know, your friends, Nathaniel and Vanessa Hale, have been reported to be missing. I’m Officer Garcia, the chief investigator of their case”, followed by more nods from the two of us. This time, Officer Garcia hesitated, but then continued, “I was hoping you might be able to shed some insight on the case, you might not know it, but you could know some information that could be helpful in finding your friends”.

He asked if we could take the matters to the local police station where we could ‘sort things out, undisturbed’ and, after a moment’s pause, we acquiesced.
