Dearest J,
Hey, I just can’t believe that you wrote me a letter! I never knew that it took ten days for a letter to reach Australia from India.
I thought I won’t ever get to talk to you again as you didn’t contact me even once in these ten days. Don’t you think calling or messaging would have been a better option than writing letters as firstly, they take so much time to reach and, secondly, anyone can get hold of them. I don’t want to demotivate you but do you have any explanation to this if anyone in your family finds out about us?
I am thankful that you decided to write to me, provided all the risk involved from your side of the world. I love you too. I don’t know how long-distance relationships work, especially when the mode of communication is these archaic letters; but if you have decided on this, then I will support you completely.
How are things at the university? Do you miss my presence?

Dear S,
I am good, hope the same for you. Letters usually take ten days to reach from India to Australia. I like the excitement of waiting for a letter, don’t you? Although writing letters is not a hard-and-fast rule. You can talk to me over social media or traditional calls too. I wrote to you because I thought that emotions can be felt better through it. I am a bit old-school that way.
Don’t worry about someone getting hold of these letters, I will be cautious. A very famous dialogue from a very famous Hindi classic film says “Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya?”, meaning “Why fear if you love someone?” Lovers in India have followed this as a thumb rule since the movie was released.
Neither do I know how long-distance relationships work as I have never been in one before. Actually, I have never been in a relationship before this. You are the first person who accepted me as I am. I just had crushes, but they never materialized into anything more.
Everything is wonderful at the university, only now it is devoid of your presence. I can’t even tell you how much I miss you… sitting next to me, singing songs in your broken Hindi, walking in Lodhi garden holding hands, talking for hours at an end at Humayun’s tomb… I miss you everywhere. I can’t tell you how much I love you.

Dearest J,
Aww… I miss you too Jav. Don’t get emotional, although I can bet you would have cried after writing that letter.
I am doing great. Told dad that I would write him letters from now. He laughed for minutes before asking me whether I do drugs. Living in the same country and communicating through letters might have sounded weird to him. Anyway, Claire told me that she would wait for my letter every weekend. I so love her.
I wish I could “like the excitement” of waiting for your letters. It is more of a stress for me because I keep thinking for days at a stretch whether my letter would reach you and whether your letter would reach me without getting damaged, or worse, lost. Your letter reaches me in ten days and mine takes just five to reach you; don’t you think it is a discrimination against me? I am giving double the test of time in this.
Jab pyaar kiya toh darna kya? Why didn’t you teach this to me while I was still in India? You taught me only fifteen words during my six months stay.
Have you never been in a relationship before? I have been in two of them. I had a mutual separation both times. My exes are my friends. I will make sure you meet them when you come here.
I went to the university yesterday to submit my thesis. My viva voce is scheduled for the 15th of the next month. I have resumed my job at McDonald's. I am also doing freelance editing for some local magazines and authors. I am trying to earn as much as I can before I graduate and get a real corporate job to save the maximum amount so that we can explore everything that Australia has to offer when you come here for your holidays. I can’t tell you how eager I am to hold you in my arms… I love you so much.

Thank you for striking off my name that you had half written. Yes, I cried after writing that letter to you. I don’t believe it’s been one month since I started writing to you. I feel so overwhelmed by it. An entire month of talking over letters only without any other form of communication…
I won’t ever be able to understand how and why do you people take the name of your step parents. In India, we call them mummy and papa, or aunty and uncle if the relationship between the step parent and the child is strained. I know aunty and uncle may sound weird to you, but that’s the truth.
Aww! My love is giving double the test of time in receiving a letter! I can imagine you pout while you wrote that. Hahahahaha…
You liar! Did I teach you only fifteen words? Don’t you think you are forgetting at least twenty more words and sentences that I taught you in Hindi?
I hope I don’t get awkward while meeting your exes. I have never understood the concept of exes remaining friends.
All the best for your viva. You will do an amazing job at it. You have been so sincere towards your studies and you will surely get rewarded for it.
How do you get time to study if you are busy the entire day doing these jobs? Don’t you get tired? I would have been dead tired had I been in your place. I doubt whether I would have been able to go back to the university the next day.

Dearest J,
I am rocking as always, hope you are still as boring. Hahahahaha…
We call our step-parents by their names because all of us accept the fact that neither can they replace our biological parents nor can we become their biological kids. There is no pretense. Instead, we become friends. Everything becomes easier after that.
Pout I did while writing that. Hehehehehehe…
No, I am not forgetting anything. You taught me only those many words.
You will do just fine when you meet my exes cum friends, provided you don’t get jealous of them.

I get enough time to study. I don’t get tired at all. Have you ever seen foreigners getting tired?
How about your dissertation report? Have you completed it? Are you trying for some job or a master’s degree course? What are your future plans? I have my plans ready - getting a job in my dream company. If I don’t, then I will work in some other company until I get a job there.

Today would have been your viva and I am sure you would have done a fabulous job answering all the questions correctly. I am already so proud of you.
You will get placed in your dream company, I know you will. You are so sincere, so talented and completely deserving of it.
Wow! You manage your time so well. And no, I haven’t ever seen or heard foreigners getting tired.
My dissertation report is still in process. I have almost a month’s time in hand to complete it. It is coming out great. I am trying for both the job and the master’s degree, I don’t want to rely on just one of them, especially since the competition is so high. But I don’t want to talk about it much until I see things turning in my favour.
How are your parents? Have you told them about us? Do you plan to travel after your exams end in May?

Yes, I called you boring. Boring, boring, boring. And jealous, too.
My viva went exceptionally well. My mid-term break starts in a day or two and my final exams begin on 14th May. I am both nervous and excited. I am also in the process of scheduling the job interview.
Thank you so much for always showing your trust in me. I love you so much.
You will make the best dissertation report. And I assure you that you will achieve your dreams too. People with beautiful hearts deserve beautiful things.
My parents are fabulous as always. We met for lunch last Sunday. Everyone was present there, dad, mom, Ethan, Claire and this new guy my mother is dating, Shaun. I told everyone about us during lunch. All of them said you looked so innocent in that photograph that we took in the Qutub Minar.
I write to my father every week. Although he was initially apprehensive about it, but now enjoys reading and replying to them. Ethan said that he won’t leave the hostel room when you would come to stay for holidays because he is “the older brother and younger siblings must respect their older siblings”. Ethan and I are planning to visit New Zealand after our exams end before we begin our respective jobs.

Dear Mummy and Papa
I am good here. I hope you are healthy too. The university is amazing and everyone here is so caring.
Mummy, Papa, I wanted to tell you something. I am writing this letter rather than calling you up because I want you to have a peaceful environment while reading it rather than hearing my voice. I know that you won’t appreciate it but it is necessary for me to let you know the reason why I opted to do my MBA from Australia.
I love someone who is a native of Australia. I studied hard to get a scholarship to get an admission in any university in New South Wales so that I can spend more time with her without persuading you to spend money on the same. Yes, I love a girl. Her name is Sarah, the one who had come to pick me up at the airport. Remember you had said how beautiful and caring she is? She was an exchange student in my class and I didn’t realize when I fell in love during her six months stay. Nobody knows that we love each other back in India but I no longer want to keep you both in darkness.
Mummy, Papa, I know I am your only daughter and you have a lot of dreams for me, and I promise to fulfill them all. I know that lesbianism is a crime in India and that the Muslim community might never accept me and my relationship there.
