An Endless Search

Happiness seems to arrive in many doses

Prescribed carefully for one who wanted more

Than what he could ever qualify for

The chortle of laughter of a child,

Both smiles and grimaces in plain sight

A little warmth in every air-conditioned night.

And yet, that endless search goes on

For that twitch of impatience

That fevered despair at daybreak

For someone to rise and awake

And read...not the daily papers, instead

The letters that one left beside her bed

That brief surge of hope when they are

Discovered, bringing her close though she is far

And that suspense that throbs in the heart

Will she smile at its generous affections

Or will her righteous anger break it apart?

Oh, for that tension flooding every part!

Or sometimes, it is such a simple thing

That these eyes seem to search for

That flash of colour in tresses of hair

Those eyes that could hold your gaze steady

Or that broad smile that seems all too ready

Those teeth with their childlike, sweet sincerity!

That search seems not so endless, when

Suddenly, one catches a sign now and then

Perhaps a face with only a hint, of that beauty

Which tempts the heart again to betray one's duty

Till a closer look reveals a truth too bitter

You were the best, nobody can be any better!
