She was sitting in her room- lonely, dejected and sad,

Tears rolling down inconsolably as she was feeling bad.

The agony grew so much that she could not take it anymore,

Such pain and isolation her little heart had never borne.

All this aggravated the thoughts of even ending up in her life.

She even overlooked that she was a daughter, a mother, and a wife.

And then, as she decided to pick up the sleeping pills from the shelf

She was startled by the voice of her own inner self.

"Wait", it said in a slow, but a firm tone –

"You owe me an explanation- I am the best you have ever known!"

She started- Indifference of family members, fights with friends, no praise,

criticism at every step, cold neighbors, no gifts and not even a salary raise!!

And, today, nobody cared to wish her on her special 40th birthday…

This was the final nail on the wall- no one remembered- how dare they!!!

"Wow", it said "I scribbled it all while you spoke and I want you to read",

"Ready to kill your own good self- that too for others' deeds!!!"

She felt ashamed so much that it made her mind began to swirl,

She decided to wear her best clothes and cook for 'her' birthday girl!!

Suddenly, the door flung open- her family and friends entered singing a birthday song,

Holding a big chocolate cake, flowers, cookies, cards- the list is so long!!

She looked at the scribbling on the page sheepishly- What was she planning to do!

And thanked her inner conscious and the critic- whom she never cared to listen to.

She was a happy soul and had a strong and peaceful mind.

She had learned that happiness in our own selves we must find.

Such thoughts creep into our minds as well at some point in our lives
