The Legend of Northland

This tale of Northland is often told, 

So that our basic values, we uphold, 

Far far away in a snow bound land, 

Where the sun doesn't rise for long. 

People ride on reindeer sledges, 

And children play with snow! 

A lady was engrossed in baking her cakes, 

Its aroma spread across the place, 

A Saint was hungry and passing by, 

He asked her for one cake slice, 

For he was tired and faint, 

He thought the lady would be kind. 

 

Every cake was too small to eat, 

Yet was too big to give, 

She tried and tried but in vain, 

Her efforts to bake it small were futile! 

Greed turned her heartless, 

Saint was left to wait with hunger, 

He cursed her and couldn't hold any longer. 

He said she was inhuman and merciless, 

And deserved no food nor shelter. 

The curse turned out real, 

Off she flew as a woodpecker, 

In search of food, she bore harder, 

For she deserved nothing better

In the forests, everyone found her! 

This was a lesson for all, 

To help all creatures, big and small, 

To be truthful and merciful, 

To be kind to every soul!
