Harish heard it in stoic silence and looked away thoughtfully. He could fully relate to her situation. He could take up this with his father, but he knew the answer very well.

After a minute, “I’m very sorry Priyanka. I understand but this is how the things are. My father took some loan from a money lender during my sister’s wedding and now with interest added that amount is standing tall at fifty thousand. I can surely persuade him against the new cot, mattress and new clothes but I can’t help you with that amount,” he finished apologetically.

Her shoulders slumped in defeat and she gave him a sad smile. She understood his predicament. Getting girls married off was an expensive affair and even now girl babies were aborted or rejected after birth just for this reason. 

She was extremely lucky to have supportive parents who took pains to educate her. She was a diligent student and worked her way to top in all her classes. However, her dream of going to college and becoming a teacher would remain a dream forever.
